LA MULATRESSE
"SOLITUDE"
Since 2002, Didier Audrat has been questioning public
and urban space, particularly through memorial works.
Each of his creations is the result of concertations with
historians, anthropologists, archaeologists and his own
perception of those historical figures experiences.
"What I am interested in is the transmission of a historical
particular event where a human being is at the center, and
acts as a vector of new ideas, new movements, new ideals…" DA

The challenge with Solitude was that there is no depiction or description
other than she was mulatto and pregnant.
The artist has chosen, to bring this character back to life, through a classic
representation, to interpret her as someone educated and well dressed.
Her loose hair is significant of her statue as a woman, especially at this time.
Her expression and her posture express his strength of character and her
will to want to take part in the fight for freedom, despite his physical condition.
The magic trick of the sculptural interpretation is the game, even the
contradictionbetween the subject's state of fragility (Solitude is pregnant) and
the strengthand temerity of her act as well as her determination in the
expression of her faceand attitude in motion.
Solitude is erected in the « Solitude » Garden, Place du General Catroux,
Paris 17th France.
The statut was Inaugurated on the occasion of the National Day to Commemorate Memories of Slave Trade,
Slavery and their Abolition, by
- Jean Marc Ayrault / former First Minister of France ( left ) - Anne Hidalgo / Mayor of Paris City ( center ) - Didier Audrat / Artist ( right )
